The 2019 CAUTG Annual Meeting (June 1-3) assembles presentations and special events on any topic or period in German Studies (German-language literature, cinema, cultural studies, German language, and language pedagogy), as well as from related fields such as history, art history, philosophy, political studies, and musicology. The 2019 CAUTG meeting has a particular emphasis on the relation of German and Indigenous Studies, genocide studies, as well as the circulation of ideas such as sustainability, accessibility, global mobility, health, culture, education, nationalism, and transnationalism in German-speaking and European discourses. Two special events challenge traditional forms of thinking and traditional media. Renowned media and cultural historian Professor Wulf Kansteiner from Aarhus University in Denmark will present a keynote lecture (on June 2) entitled Remembering Genocide in the 21stCentury: The Failures and Promises of Digital Trauma Culture. His talk analyzes the opportunities and challenges of digital Holocaust representation (virtual reality, social media, and gaming technologies) in relation to immersive and interactive digital technologies used for the remembrance of aboriginal culture and suffering in Canada and Australia. A roundtable on Indigenous & German Studies (on June 1) explores the role German Studies—its research, teaching, and institutions—can play in the overdue rethinking of the academy beyond its colonial, exclusionary, and racist legacies with a view toward transformative change and social justice. Other special events include: • a talk entitled A Queer Century, 1869-1969 by Dr. Heike Bauer from the Birkbeck University of London (June 3; in collaboration with UBC’s Rare Books and Special Collections) • the Waterloo Centre for German Studies Canadian Book Prize lecture, a pre-conference event (on May 31) discussing career opportunities of humanities graduate students outside of academia • a lecture on language and pedagogy sponsored by the Goethe-Institute • several interdisciplinary special panels • an association banquet (evening of June 3) during which the CAUTG dissertation award, the Innovate German Award (co-sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service) and the Best Graduate Student Paper Award will be awarded. Most conference contributions are in English, but presentations in German and French are welcome as well.
